Reference letters or letters of recommendation (LOR) are needed to be admitted to a university in the United Kingdom. These reference letters are requirements because they reveal to university officials your eligibility. If you are going to be applying for scholarships you will need reference letters. In some cases, you may even need two of these letters.
Academic reference letters or letters of recommendation (LOR) should include certain information. This information is important as it leaves an impression on university officials when they are reviewing applications. Reference letters should include all information about an applicant’s work-study and work history. Achievements in academic studies and the community should be listed in this letter. Your interest in wanting to attend the university and your interest in what you plan to study should be included. The referee should offer their thoughts and sentiments about the applicant’s interest in the school and their ability to study at the university.
An applicant has to be mindful of who they select as a referee. A referee should be someone who knows the applicant well. This could be a tutor, former schoolteacher or someone who is personal to the applicant. The referee should be able to demonstrate professionalism towards the subject the applicant is applying to study. A referee can also be someone who works in a industry which is closely connected to the program the applicant plans to study.
The format is not that picky for a reference letter for U.K. universities. Typically, the length should be less than two pages. The letter should have a letterhead. The referee should include their information as well. This information should be address, phone number, and email. This contact information should be placed in the right-hand corner.
There is no set way to organize the reference letter. However, the university will prefer to read a more organized letter versus one that lacks cohesiveness or organization. It is a good idea for the referee to include information on their background. The university will like to know who this referee is. The university will like to know why the referee thinks this applicant should be admitted to the university. Thus an introduction about the referee and their relation to the applicant would be very appreciated to start the reference letter.
After this introduction, the referee should then begin diving into the accomplishments, strengths, and reasons why the applicant would make a good fit for the school. Tutorials and coursework can be included in the letter to display the applicant’s work ethic and past achievements. Extracurricular work and activities, being apart of student clubs, student jobs, and other achievements should be noted in the letter as well if they relate to what the applicant plans to study at the university.
Ending the letter, the referee should place an offer to allow further contact The referee should also include a signature at the end of the academic reference letter. For the applicant make sure to include information to your referee so they will know what to put in the letter. Also, inform them of deadlines.
